Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Coggled and Brushed Floral Decorations, attributed to the Bissett Family, Old Bridge, NJ, circa 1820, ovoid jar with footed base, applied lug handles, and narrow, slightly-flared rim, decorated around the shoulder with a coggled leaf or geometric motif below a series of incised lines. Further decorated on the front with a brushed flower and on the reverse with a brushed stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The combination of shoulder coggling with the Bissetts' distinctive floral brushwork is most unusual. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Significant chipping to base. Two large, glazed-over flakes to rim, measuring 3 1/8" and 2 1/8". An additional 3/4" post-firing rim chip.
