Five-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jar with Alkaline Glaze, probably Alabama origin, third quarter 19th century, rotund jar with tall rounded collar and two thin, applied strap handles at the shoulder, the surface covered in a light-olive alkaline glaze. Shoulder decorated with an incised wavy line above two straight incised lines, underscored by a large freehand incised "5". Appealing form. A 1" x 1/4" hole in one side. One small rim chip. Two small chips to bottom edge and some light wear to bottom edge. Some traces of old red paint to surface. H 15".
