Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Inscribed "Lm", attributed to Dave at Lewis Miles' Stony Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, highly-ovoid jug with stepped spout, the surface covered in a heavy alkaline glaze with streaky runs extending from the shoulder to midsection. Shoulder incised in large script with the initials, "Lm", along with two slash marks and three punctates. Excellent glaze with high gloss and appealing variations in color. Restored handle. Restoration to spout chips. An inverted Y-shaped line, extending from spout the midsection, possibly in the glaze only. Minor base chips. A thin and minor, 7/8" flake to base on reverse. Some light scratches to shoulder area. H 13 1/2".
