Stoneware Bellarmine Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, probably Frechen, Germany, 16th or 17th century, ovoid jug with tooled spout and ribbed handle, decorated on the neck with a molded and applied design of a bearded man's face. Further decorated below with impressed, serrate horseshoe markings. Sides of jug decorated with freehand incised Germanic tulip motifs. Though produced one-hundred-and-fifty to three hundred years earlier than its American stoneware counterpart, the incised designs on this jug are remarkably similar to those found on later American examples. A post-firing chip to interior of spout. Two small, partially-glazed over spout chips, which occurred in the making. Small, shallow base chips. Meandering tight surface fissures and lines, which appear to have occurred in the firing. H 13".
