Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO, / JOHNSTOWN, PA", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with squared rim and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a sweeping tulip motif. Inscribed with a brushed cobalt "2" underscored by stripes under one handle, and impressed with "J. SWANK & CO." maker's mark under opposite handle. Stylized cobalt floral motifs to handle terminals. Desirable form. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced NC collection, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Areas of fry to cobalt. A 1 3/8" rim chip and a 1 1/8" chipped section to rim, both possibly in-the-firing. A 1 1/4" handle chip.
