Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.", Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1840, skilfully-potted, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated across the shoulder with a flowering vine design. Reverse and areas under handles with cobalt foliate motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From a Virginia estate. A 1" chip to underside along edge. A 1 1/2" chipped section to one handle along with a small chip to end of same handle. Two chips to opposite handle. A few small in-the-firing contact marks to front of jar.
