Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.", Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, heavily-decorated around the shoulder with a brushed stem bearing fan-shaped flowers and graduated leaves. Further decorated above with draped chain link motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent decoration and desirable maker. Provenance: From a Virginia estate. Very nice condition with some small chips to rim, molding below rim, and base.
