One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Incised Marking on Underside, Stamped "H. SMITH & Co.", Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated with a brushed floral motif surrounding the merchant mark of Hugh Smith and his son, Hugh Charles Smith. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse decorated with a single foliate motif. Underside with incised wavy line, possibly an "M", likely used to signify an individual potter's work. Provenance: From a Virginia estate. A chipped section to end of one handle. A few minor base nicks. Two short, faint lines to shoulder area on jar's front, not visible on interior.
