Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with a brushed design of a face profile surrounded by a crescent-shaped foliate motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. One of the more unusual forms for this classic Cowden & Wilcox motif, appearing on a desirable one-gallon size. Provenance: Consigned from Washington State; ex-Clyde Youtz Collection. Excellent condition with a smooth 1" in-the-firing dent to side of rim, which is glazed over, and a minor glazed-over iron ping to shoulder. H 8" ; Diam. (across top) 8".
