Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Jar, Stamped "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG", VA origin, circa 1890, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim, the surface dipped in a cream-colored slip and decorated with an alternating design of one large copper spot and two smaller manganese spots. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Interior surface covered in a lead-and-manganese glaze. Impressed with S. Bell & Sons maker's mark to shoulder. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in Texas. Several short, tight cracks from rim, the longest measuring 3 1/4". Wear to rim. Body of jar with light surface wear and in-the-firing crazing to glaze. H 8 3/4".
