Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Jar, Stamped "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG", VA origin, circa 1890, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, the surface dipped in a cream-colored slip, and decorated with an alternating design of one large copper spot and two smaller manganese spots. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Interior covered in a lead-and-manganese glaze. Shoulder impressed with S. Bell & Sons maker's mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in Texas. An X-shaped line on underside, continuing onto base. A heavily-chipped, semi-circular area to underside at edge, possibly in-the-making. Other crazing and light wear to body of jar. Crazing and wear to rim. Scratches to glaze on interior. H 8 1/2".
