One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, James River Valley of VA origin, possibly Stephen B. Sweeney, Henrico County, VA, circa 1838-1868, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a stylized brushwork composed of graduated dashes, along with cobalt highlights to the handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a forty-year Maryland collection. A 5/8" base flake. A chip and minor nick to one handle.
