Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "R. BUTT / W", Washington, D.C. origin, circa 1835, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and small, arching tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a curving vine culminating in a tulip blossom. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed at the shoulder with maker's mark of Washington, D.C. pottery owner, Richard Butt, above a one-gallon capacity mark. Excellent decoration and color. Provenance: From a Virginia estate. A hairline on underside, continuing as a very faint line partway up reverse of jar. Three very minor chips to bottom edge. A shallow lime ping to end of one handle.
