Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed swag and hanging flower motif. Three freehand stripes under each handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed under one handle with Solomon Bell maker's mark below a four-gallon capacity mark. Two minor chips on interior of rim. A tight spider crack on underside, including a crack that extends 5 1/2" up base of jar. Chips to end of one handle terminal. Minor chipping to base. A long tight horizontal line at base.
