Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "W. ROBERTS / BINGHAMTON, N.Y.", circa 1870, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with fan-shaped tail and striped body, perched on a curving vine with scrolled leaves. Unusual incised notches appear in the tips of the bird's six tail feathers. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Restoration to base and section of spout. An area of fry to cobalt where bird's body meets its tail.
