One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Batter Pail, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG", PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay ears with wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the reverse with an abstract stenciled design resembling a snowflake. Spout decorated at base with wreath-like cobalt brushwork. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals, brushed in the form of a stylized tulips. Includes tin cover. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately forty years ago. Old, smooth chipping around spout. Heavy chipping to handle at base. A minor chip to shoulder molding. A minor chip to interior of rim. A faint 1 3/4" Y-shaped surface line on front, not visible on interior.
