One-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Impressed Floral Decoration, attributed to Jonathan Fenton, Boston, MA, late 18th century, highly-ovoid jar with footed base, elaborately-tooled shoulder and collar, and oversized loop handles, the front and reverse decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted flower. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The large size of the handles and profuse tooling to the body make this jar a particularly appealing example of Fenton floral-decorated stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. An in-the-firing contact mark to one side, with associated surface chipping. A small piece of adhered clay below one handle. Various surface lines to base area, one of which is located on underside. A tight, approximately 3 1/2" spider line descending from rim on front and reverse. A 2 1/2" base flake.
