Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with long curving vine bearing several groups of graduated leaves, culminating in a flower blossom. Base with freehand "2" flanked by dashes. Cobalt stripe below rim and at base. Underside incised with an X. Very nice condition with some light wear to cobalt, a 7/8" base chip, and white paint to underside.
