Auction Highlight: October 28, 2017 Auction | New England Stoneware | Norton Pottery
Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Flying Hawk Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed scene featuring a hawk with well-detailed wings, flying above a hilly landscape with fence. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A desirable Norton figural motif, scarce in its own right, even more difficult to find on a piece of this small size. Spout chips. A glazed-over base chip. A chip to underside at edge. A small U-shaped line at base. Some staining to surface.
