Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Flying Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, N.Y.", circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a flying bird with incised eye approaching a curved flowering vine. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a long-term private collection. A 1" rim chip above one handle. A small base chip on reverse. Spots of staining. A few minor spots of fry to cobalt and some tiny flakes to surface.
