Rare Three-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stenciled "RICE & BROYLES", Lindside, WV origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and thick rounded rim, decorated with brushed cobalt foliate designs surrounding the stenciled name, "RICE & BROYLES". Reverse with brushed cobalt inscription, "3 1/2", underscored by another foliate design. Significant in-the-firing surface cracks in underside extending onto base, as well as one crack in underside, which extends through to interior. Underside and cracks on base stabilized with black paint and/or plaster. Jar was made out-of-round and lopsided in the firing.
