Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Star Motif, Stenciled "Knox, Haught & Co. / Shinnston. W. Va", circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, the shoulder area decorated with a band of five stenciled stars with freehand straight and wavy stripes above and below. Midsection with Knox, Haught & Co. stenciling, including stylized stenciled flourishes. Base with freehand "2" flanked by dashes. A finely-decorated example of West Virginia stoneware. The appealing star designs are rare for this maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in a PA home. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some in-the-firing discoloration to reverse.
