Fine Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Federal Eagle and Freehand Brushwork, attributed to Stephen H. Ward, West Brownsville, PA, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared wax sealer rim, decorated with a stenciled design of a Federal eagle with shield, clutching an olive branch and arrows. Decorated around the stenciled design with a border of brushed cobalt ovals. Cobalt stripe below rim. Desirable decoration and form. Several shallow chips to interior of rim. Two minor chips to exterior of rim. Minor wear to edge of inner wax sealer rim. H 8 1/2".
