Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Owl-and-Floral Decoration, Stamped "T. DURELL", probably Thomas Durell, Milton, Trumbull County, Ohio, circa 1835, highly-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with an incised design of an owl perched on a stylized branch, beside an incised plant featuring impressed leaves and stars. Shoulder impressed with an incised Roman numeral II, surrounded by impressed asterisks. Incised to right of owl with the initials, "JAS". Excellent folk art decoration. Provenance: A recently-discovered example, from a collection amassed decades ago. Missing handle. Losses to spout. A crack in underside, extending several inches up body of jug as two spider cracks.
