Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, probably Ohio River Valley origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and applied arching handles, decorated with an unusual incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design resembling an oak branch. Impressed two-gallon capacity mark within a dashed oval on reverse. Brushed cobalt highlights to tops of handles and capacity mark. This jar shares similarities in form and color to pieces produced in the Ohio River Valley region, and was likely made at one of the many potteries in this expansive area, involving several states, including Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. Excellent decoration. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
