Scarce Small-Sized Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Purplish Slip Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1790, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a graduated drape or "fish scale" design applied in purplish slip, probably composed of cobalt and manganese. Additional purplish slip highlights to handle terminals. Excellent size and form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Excellent condition with a thin, shallow 1/2" rim chip. Other minor rim chips. H 7 1/8".
