Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Fish Decoration, Stamped "J. DUNTZE / MANUFACT'R. / N. HAVEN, Ct.", circa 1825, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a fish with open mouth and very long tail. Impressed above decoration with the scarce, cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "J. DUNTZE / MANUFACT'R. / N. HAVEN, Ct.", within a sawtoothed border. This jug is the first example of Duntze stoneware we have seen decorated with an incised fish. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Spout chips. Shallow base chips. Some in-the-firing flaws, including some dryness to surface and iron pings. H 15".
