One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, New York State or New England origin, circa 1830, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird standing on a stylized ground, flanked by shrubs and a flower, its body heavily-detailed with a ringed neck and feather detail throughout. A small incised "x" in front of the bird likely represents an insect it is trying to catch. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. A significant spider crack extending from the reverse to the sides of the jug, including a few tiny chips along crack line. A 1 1/8" in-the-firing chip to bottom edge on reverse. A minor spout chip. A few minor in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 9 1/2".
