Very Rare Stoneware Fruit Jar, Impressed "QUINCES" and "PEARS", Stamped "C. CROLIUS / STONEWARE / MANUFACTURER / Manhattan-Wells. / NEW-YORK.", early 19th century, approximately one-gallon cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and narrow opening, impressed at the shoulder with the fruit names "QUINCES" and "PEARS" flanking a Clarkson Crolius, Sr. oval maker's mark. This piece is the first example of Crolius's popular fruit jar form that we have seen impressed with two different fruit names. Possibly made to hold different fruits during different periods of the year, this jar could be turned to the side presenting the corresponding fruit name. Provenance: Robert Meltzer Collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 11".
