Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA", circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a man's profile flanked by a crescent-shaped arch of leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A difficult-to-find form for this iconic Cowden & Wilcox design. Provenance: David Musser Collection. Significant losses to cobalt, possibly in-the-firing. Dryness to surface. Rim chips. Wear to rim and handles. Wear to molding at base of rim. H 7 1/2" ; Diameter 11".
