Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird and Floral Decoration, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR & Co. / GEDDES. N.Y.", circa 1860, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a bird with heavily-shaded wing and striped body, perched on a looping flourish adjoining a flowering plant. Slip-trailed "2" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A prized Farrar design. Chips and nicks to inner rim, which would hold a lid. A 5" long crescent-shaped flake to underside at edge, which likely occurred in the firing. Additional shallow chipping to bottom edge.
