Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1840, highly-ovoid form with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, semi-squared rim, and circular bung hole, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed tulip underscored by a looping line, which forms an arc around the flower. Brushed cobalt highlight to handle terminal. Excellent form and unusual decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Very nice condition with a 1" chip to one handle and a tight, 1 1/2" line on underside, continuing 1 7/8" up base of cooler. H 14 1/2".
