Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Pedestal-Based Water Cooler with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Ohio origin, circa 1860, large-sized, ovoid cooler with flared pedestal base, heavily-ribbed handles, and unusual tear-drop-shaped bunghole, the front decorated with an abstract foliate design accented with numerous spots. Heavy cobalt highlights to bung hole and handle terminals. Impressed "5" within a sawtooth border at shoulder. Exceptional form. Very nice condition. A 1 1/8" rim chip on reverse. A chip to bottom edge of pedestal on exterior. A few minor chips to underside of pedestal. A chip to interior edge of pedestal. A flake and shallow chipping to bunghole. A smear of old gray paint to reverse, unrelated to any sort of restoration. H 20".
