Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-on-Flower Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER", New York State origin, circa 1860, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an artistic slip-trailed design of a songbird perched on the blossom of a daisy plant. Bird features excellent spotted and striped details throughout the body. Daisy plant includes heavy shading to the leaves and buds, the central blossom with well-detailed petals and a solid-cobalt center surrounded by spots. and a spots surrounding a solid cobalt center. Slip-trailed "6." to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Exceptional in size and decoration, this impressive crock combines two of Burger's iconic cobalt motifs, the songbird and the daisy, on a single piece. A 9 3/4" long X-shaped crack from rim on left side of crock's front, part of which continues far onto the left side of the crock and includes a small filled-and-colored sliver. Some very light, colored flaking to left and right sides of decoration. A small colored rim chip on reverse. H 14 1/8".
