Unusual Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Lid, North Carolina origin, circa 1860, ovoid jar with applied strap handles and angled rim molding, the surface covered in a dark, mottled salt glaze with appealing runs under each handle and heavy texture throughout. Interior with reddish-brown iron-oxide wash. Jar includes original salt-glazed lid, hand-modeled in pinched fashion. Exceptional size and appealing surface. The survival of this little jar's original lid is additionally noteworthy. A 1 3/4" area of shallow chipping to rim. Two other, minor rim nicks. A 7/8" area of shallow chipping to one handle. A small chip to underside at edge. Shallow chips to lid. H (excluding lid) 4 3/4" ; H (including lid) 6".
