Rare Half-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swag Decoration, Stamped "HAMILTON & PERSHING / JOHNSTOWN, PA", circa 1852-1855, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and tall, flaring collar, decorated around the shoulder with a series of brushed, graduated swags. Impressed with the rare and elaborate maker's mark of the Johnstown, PA firm of Hamilton & Pershing near the shoulder. Jar includes a fitting salt-glazed stoneware lid, probably original to the piece. Appealing form and desirable, early Johnstown maker. Jar and lid in excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 8 1/8".
