Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an undulating tulip vine design, heavy freehand striping, and a cobalt-script "5" flanked by foliate motifs at the base. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Very nice condition with some tight lines on underside, which do not appear to extend through to the interior. Two of these lines extending onto body of jar, measuring approximately 3 1/2" and 2 1/4". Some in-the-firing roughness from stacking to top of rim. A minor chip to end of right handle. Some grease staining.
