Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Cross Decoration, Stenciled "J.P. PARKER / JANE LEW / WV", circa 1870, cylindrical churn with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, featuring a stenciled cross flanked by stars beside a reverse-stenciled "3". J.P. Parker maker's stenciling below. Stenciling is flanked by widely-brushed wavy stripes of cobalt. Additionally incised with a number "3" under one handle. This churn, which features Parker's desirable cross stenciling, is the first of its type we have seen with reversed capacity stenciling. A 1" rim chip. Two smaller rim chips on reverse. A 3" hairline from rim on front. A minor, in-the-firing separation in the Albany slip on interior rim area, measuring 1 3/4" and not visible on exterior. H 14 1/4".
