Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Water with Incised Floral Decoration, attributed to Peter Cross, Hartford, CT, circa 1806-1808, highly-ovoid, jug-form cooler with heavily-tooled spout, ribbed handle, and circular bunghole, the front decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flower with circular accents to the petal tips and center of the blossom. Brushed cobalt highlights to bunghole and handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Heavy wear to bunghole. Cracks to underside and base on reverse. Base chips. H 18".
