Very Fine Quart-Sized Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, attributed to the Crolius Family, Manhattan, NY, circa 1795, elegantly-potted, bulbous jar with narrow, footed base and heavily-tooled shoulder, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design in the Manhattan style. This example includes combed accents throughout the incised design. This trait has been observed on a growing body of late 18th century, unmarked stoneware pieces from Manhattan, which exhibit a level of craftsmanship higher than products made after 1800. This level of craftsmanship can also be noted in the delicate potting of the jar, which features an unusually-narrow foot. Exceptional size, form, and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Very nice condition with shallow chipping to rim. H 8 3/8".
