Scarce Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Preserve Jar, Impressed "PICKLES", attributed to Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and thin, semi-squared rim molding, the shoulder impressed with the word, "PICKLES", and decorated around its circumference with vertical daubs of cobalt. A desirable Crolius form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 2 1/4" crack on underside, continuing 7" up front of jar. A 5" crack from rim on reverse. Two chips and heavy wear to rim. A small glazed-over base chip. H 9 3/4".
