Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with crest and long tail, perched on a tree stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: David Musser Collection. Some light exfoliation to side, reverse, and base. Heavy shallow chipping and wear to inner rim where a lid would rest.
