Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Branch Decoration, Stamped "M. & T. MILLER / NEWPORT, PA", circa 1870, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a bird perched on a branch with heavily-brushed leaves. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark and handle terminals. Relatively few bird-decorated examples of Miller stoneware are known. Provenance: A recently-discovered example, which descended in a Virginia family. Crazing to shoulder and around base, possibly in-the-firing. Two spout chips. Two short, faint lines in spout. A long horizontal crack to base extending around sides of jug, partially visible on right side of jug's front. H 13 1/2".
