Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with squared rim and applied tab handles, decorated with a sweeping tulip vine on the front and reverse. Handle terminals decorated with leaf-like accents. Brushed number 1 under one handle. Impressed under opposite handle with J. Swank & Co. maker's mark above an impressed one-gallon capacity mark, underscored by two cobalt dashes. Rim chips. A 3 1/4" section of shallow chipping to base.
