Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, attributed to David Greenland Thompson, Morgantown, WV, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with incised banding, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated at the shoulder with freehand vining between two stripes, across the midsection with two foliate motifs, and at the base with flowers flanking a freehand number 4. Brushed cobalt highlights to the ends of the handles. Long crack on reverse, extending from shoulder to base and across underside. A glazed-over chip to exterior of rim. Small chips to interior of rim.
