Half-Gallon Stoneware Lidded Butter Crock with Cobalt Swag Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical crock with footed base, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with brushed swags applied over slip-washed clay. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark at shoulder. Includes lid with cobalt swag decoration and cobalt-highlighted knob, impressed with John Bell maker's mark on underside. Crazing and cracks throughout crock. Numerous small rim chips. Lid with chips to edge and a 1 1/8" chip to flange on underside. The lid's size and loose fit suggest it was not intended for the crock, although the decoration matches well. H (of crock) 4 1/2" ; Diameter (of crock) 7 1/2" ; Diameter (of lid) 8 1/2".
