Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Pear Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical jar with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of an inverted pear amid a floral spray with circular blossom, leaves, and curled trails. Relatively few examples of Norton stoneware with pear decorations are known. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 1 3/8" chip to rim on reverse. A small iron ping to reverse and shoulder on front. A worn spot to one end of each handle. A 3 1/4" glazed-over, inverted Y-shaped line on interior of rim, a very small portion of which is visible on the exterior. Wear to inner rim where a lid would rest.
