Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO. / PA.", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled rim molding and applied lug handles, decorated with a finely-stenciled floral design at the center, stenciled star-shaped floral motifs flanking the number 4, and stenciled flourishes at the corners. Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Large cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A long, thin fork-shaped crack on underside, continuing 7 1/2" up reverse. Streaks of water glass staining to surface. A small chip to one handle. A tiny surface chip near base on side of crock.
