Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J. BENNAGE 1837", Portage County, OH, circa 1837, highly-ovoid jar with large lug handles and flared rim, decorated with brushed cobalt highlights to the handle terminals, maker's mark, and capacity mark, applied over slip-coated clay. A few rim chips on reverse. Shallow chipping to base, most or all of which appears to be in-the-firing. A 3" Y-shaped line at base, continuing 1 3/4" onto underside. An additional faint 2 3/4" surface line above the Y-shaped line, which was probably created in the firing.
