Outstanding and Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird and Insect Decoration, Inscribed "EXCELSIOR", attributed to Seymour & Bosworth, Hartford, CT, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with applied lug handles, and slightly-flared collar, featuring a large slip-trailed design of a flying bird pursuing an insect. Inscribed below with the word "EXCELSIOR", underscored by a scalloped line design. Wonderful decoration on an impressive, large-sized jar. A 9 3/4" crack on underside, continuing onto front as a thin 12" Y-shaped crack. A 1 3/4" crack along edge of one handle. Wear to interior of rim where a lid would rest. Two minor nicks on interior of rim. A 7 1/2" inverted Y-shaped line at base on side of jar. H 17".
